Differences between Max and Elite Winches
Two main Viper Winches are the VIPER MAX and VIPER ELITE series of winches. You will have to decide which one is right for you.
The gear housing on the Max Series winches is a four piece sintered alloy assembly, while the gear housing on the Elite Series winches are made from a single piece aluminum housing, which increases structural integrity, long term water resistance, and allows for lower viscosity grease.
The other major difference in the gear end is the freespool/engage mechanism. The Max Series winches use a Cam Follower that pushes a sun gear on the drive shaft in and out of engagement, while the Elite Series winches use locking pins which engage and disengage a slip ring to activate the freespool mechanism. This provides a very robust and very efficient engagement system which reduces strain on the electric winch motor and eliminates gear chatter.
Outside of the gear end of the winch the differences between the Max and Elite Series winches are what comes in their kits. The Max Series winches come standard with a 9’ corded remote and 3/16th”x50’ Steel cable, which can be upgraded to Synthetic cable.
The Elite Series winches come standard with a wireless remote system and ¼”x40’ Synthetic cable. If you’re planning to get yourself into deep mud and high water or if you really value the wireless remote system I would strongly suggest you get an Elite Series winch. If you’re not expecting to get into the deep stuff or if you don’t value the wireless system then a Max Series winch may be a low cost option for you. Source
